An over under bet is a wager on the combined score of both teams in a game — you never have to pick a winner. The sportsbook sets a number; you decide whether the final score total will go over or under it.
What Does Over Under Mean in Betting?
Also called a "total," the over under is one of the three core bet types alongside the moneyline and the point spread. The sportsbook posts a number — say, 44.5 points for an NFL game — and prices both sides. Bet the Over and you need the teams to combine for 45 or more. Bet the Under and you need 44 or fewer.
No interest in which team wins. No concern about the margin of victory. Only the combined score matters.
How Does the Over Under Work in Football? A Concrete Example
The Chiefs host the Bills. The sportsbook sets the total at 47.5 points. Both sides are priced at -110 odds, which means a $110 bet returns $100 in profit. The Chiefs win 28–21; the combined score is 49. The Over wins. A $110 Over ticket pays back $210 total ($100 profit + the original $110 stake).
If the line were a whole number — 47 instead of 47.5 — and the teams combined for exactly 47, the result is a push and all bets are refunded. The half-point added to a line is called a hook, and it exists specifically to kill that outcome. More on both scenarios at Push and Hook: What Happens When the Score Lands on the Number.
Why Does It Cost $110 to Win $100?
That gap is the vig — the sportsbook's built-in commission. At -110 on each side the book holds roughly 4.76% of every dollar wagered. That means a bettor must win more than 52.38% of over under bets just to break even long-term. Implied probability is the break-even rate every totals bettor should understand before placing a wager.
What Sports Have Over Under Betting?
Totals markets exist across virtually every major sport: NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college football, college basketball, and soccer. Typical NFL regular-season totals range from 38 to 52 points, with most games settling in the 41–47 range. The mechanics are identical regardless of sport — only the scoring scale and the posted number change.

Where Can You Legally Bet the Over Under?
As of 2026, roughly 32 states permit statewide online or mobile sports betting. DraftKings and FanDuel alone hold approximately 70% of US handle and are licensed across most legal states. Tech Insider's 2026 legal-state tracker lists the current map. California, Texas, and about eight other states still have no legal online sports betting. Do Over Under Winnings Get Taxed?
Yes. All gambling winnings are federally taxable income. A W-2G is issued when net winnings exceed $600 and are at least 300× the original wager. Starting tax year 2026, a new $2,000 reporting threshold takes effect. Full details at Taxes on Over Under Winnings: W-2G Thresholds and Federal Rules for 2026.
